Was there ever a man that epitomized grace and coolness than Fred Astaire? To that matter, did any woman bring that degree of sex appeal and timeless beauty to dance than Ginger Rogers? And yet it was a partnership that nearly didn't happen. "Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances" - this was reportedly written for Fred Astaire's initial screen test for RKO Pictures in the early 1930s but it didn't stop them from pairing him up with Ginger Rogers for Flying Down To Rio. Both Fred and Ginger had been in a couple of previous pictures for RKO but it was Flying Down To Rio that catapulted them to stardom.
Fred had such a style and character on screen that it was difficult not to warm to him instantly, and when this was combined with the beauty and elegance from Ginger... well, it was a match made in heaven.
